Apparitions is the new BBC One series about a Roman Catholic priest, played by Martin Shaw, involved in exorcisms. Here he reveals his thoughts about the series.

What kind of character is Father Jacob?

Jacob is a priest who is just trying to do his job, which is to promote people for sainthood. He is undeniably a good man. His bosses feel that he embraces exorcism but he is actually quite wary of it. He feels so strongly that we are all susceptible to the forces of Satan, that there are times when it is the only option.

What attracted you to the role?

Well I had the original idea to play an exorcist and I've felt for a long time that we need something very different on television. Nowadays it's very difficult to find producers who are willing to take a chance on something that challenges the norm but Tony Wood at Lime Pictures was prepared to take that chance and we've managed to create something that I think viewers will like, but will also force them to think and engage in the programme rather than view it passively.

This is quite a different role to what viewers will know you for, do you enjoy challenging yourself with different characters?

I not only enjoy it but I think it's absolutely vital. It's very easy to forget that acting is actually an art form and you have to train for it. You do need to explore, it's all too easy just to stay in the same place and stay in the comfort zone

Who do you think is the most intriguing character in Apparitions?

I think all of the characters in Apparitions are very complex and multi-dimensional. Michael (Rick Warden) is particularly intriguing because when we first meet him he is so fully possessed that he doesn't actually know who he is any more. His actions, his words – none of it is really him and there are times when he actually wants to be saved from himself. Liam is also an interesting character as initially many people probably wouldn't consider him to be possessed. He represents the anti-religious views of many people and he is a good father, although he is possessed by demons I feel that the audience will empathise with him in a way that just isn't possible with Michael.

How have you found filming?

I've been working with a great cast, crew, producer and director so you can't really ask for better than that. We've all worked incredibly hard to ensure that we do justice to this fantastic script and create something that is believable.

Which scene did you find most difficult/interesting to film?

The exorcism scenes were possibly the most difficult, particularly as in one of them I was connected to a high wire! I had to be thrown across a room and hit a wall with quite a bit of force so we needed the special effects to make it look completely real. The second exorcism was also interesting as everyone involved in the scene was so submerged in the words and the actions that their reactions were almost instinctive – it almost felt like we were doing it for real!

Does religion and spirituality play a part in your personal life?

Religion doesn't play a part in my life but spirituality does. I follow a spiritual path which is right at the centre of my life. I believe in God and I have a huge respect and love for all religions so from that respect it plays a part in my life but not the man-made, ceremonial and controversial aspects of religion.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will devote its Friday, June 27, primetime lineup to a three-film tribute to legendary dancer and musical star Cyd Charisse. The tribute will include Singin’ in the Rain (1952), in which she joins Gene Kelly for the famed “Broadway Melody Ballet” sequence; The Band Wagon (1953), Vincente Minnelli’s colorful backstage musical that pairs Charisse with Fred Astaire; and Silk Stockings (1957), a musical remake of Ninotchka that features another sterling Charisse-Astaire collaboration. “Cyd Charisse was one of the few who managed to have it all: a great career, a place in movie history, respect from her peers and a husband who adored her,” said TCM host Robert Osborne. “My last time seeing her just a few months ago in New York said it all, with photographers snapping pictures of the movie star while she smiled brightly on the arm of her husband of 60 years, Tony Martin.”

The following is the complete schedule for TCM’s June 27 memorial tribute to Cyd Charisse:

HBO Documentary HARD TIMES AT DOUGLASS HIGH: A No Child Left Behind Report Card Premieres Monday, June 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT

The No Child Left Behind Act was created to boost academic levels of American schoolchildren by setting standardized goals across the nation – and holding states, districts and schools accountable for performance. Produced and directed by Oscar-winners Alan and Susan Raymond, Hard Times at Douglass High: A No Child Left Behind Report Card reveals troubles and triumphs in the classrooms, hallways and offices of Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, MD – from the celebrations of drum lines and debate teams to the worries of faculty who know that 50% of their freshman will not return for their sophomore year. Soon to return to ITV is classic 1970's gameshow Mr and Mrs only with an All Star twist, we spoke to Fern Britton (one of the co-hosts) about the new series.

Fern Britton was a big fan of the original series of Mr & Mrs and is thrilled to be co-hosting the brand new series on ITV1:

“It’s funny because Phillip called and said they’re thinking of doing Mr & Mrs and shall we do it together. At that stage I didn’t know it was celebrities and I said “wow that would be such a laugh,” because it’s one of those shows that’s in your mind and we all have certain memories of it.

“I think if we revisited that series now it might look a bit dated, so I just hope that Phillip and I can bring it up to date and make it popular in people’s memories again.

“I remember Derek Bately [the original host] who was absolutely lovely and immaculate. You could imagine him smelling of wonderful soap and cologne, and he always had beautiful pink shirts on. I used to love the sound proofed booth where they’d have to go and put their big headphones on and people would get really agitated about the questions, which colour is your toothbrush and so on, I absolutely adored it. It’s the simplest format which just works so well and it’s so engaging – you can’t beat it.”

If Fern could hand pick anyone in the world to take part in the show, she would love to quiz the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh:

“I think they would make fascinating interviews and to ask them half a dozen of these little questions would be so very revealing. So if your Majesty is reading this I would love that. Or Charles and Camilla – that would be good wouldn’t it?”

From the couples that really are taking part in All Star Mr & Mrs, Fern is very excited about all of them but especially a certain few:

‘William Roach and his wife Sarah will be fantastic and David Coulthard will be interesting. Julie Goodyear and her husband will be brilliant because she blows me away - I mean she’s an icon isn’t she? So just to see how she’s reacting to married life, even though they have been together for a very long time. Lovely Shane Lynch from Boyzone will be good too, apparently he’s very particular and likes things very organised and very well sorted so I’m interested to hear about that. Vic and Nancy who are the sweetest couple and very funny. Their whole persona, well when we see them anyway, is just laughing and joking and bouncing off each other in a very happy way.’

Fern is very used to interviewing celebrities on This Morning but she reveals how this prime time show is different:

“I don’t really know any of them [guests on This Morning] really well. They come in and be guests, whereas the questions we’ll be asking on this are much more intimate and much more intrusive actually, much more revealing without being horrible hard questions. Everybody who says yes they’ll come and do it obviously has a sense of humour because otherwise they wouldn’t say yes.”

Fern doesn’t have any plans to bring her own husband Phil Vickery on to the show but admits it would be fun:

“It would be fun to play with my Phil actually. I believe we are very compatible and know quite a lot about each other, so I’d be surprised if he didn’t know quite a lot about me, and I didn’t know quite a lot about him. But it would be fun to have a go, we always sit and read those newspaper and magazine quizzes together which is just such fun.”

All Star Mr & Mrs sees Fern and Phil moving into a brand new Saturday night prime time slot and Fern explains how thrilled she is to be doing this with her good friend Phillip Schofield:

‘I’m delighted to be presenting the show with Phillip, I really am because we’re daytime partners obviously, but we didn’t know each other very well at all before we started doing This Morning together. The first day he came into the studio, we’d met each other maybe two or three times that was all, never had a conversation together and we just got on like a house on fire straight away. So I’m very very fond of him and very close to him. He’s one of my greatest friends and if I was in any kind of trouble I would ask for his advice. He is a very good sounding board and a very good friend so I’m very grateful to be working with somebody who I’m that close to and can enjoy being with.”

Despite this Fern admits to feeling slightly nervous:

“Well on the night, naturally, I’ll be nervous before we actually go in to the studio and record because that’s a natural thing. But I think the thing I’m most nervous about is people not enjoying it. I want people to really love it and have an hour of fun. I want them to really enjoy that bit of entertainment and have a laugh.”

Life on Mars was quite simply one of the best shows of recent times but after two series it came to a natural end, however, there was too much fun to be had with the character of DCI Gene Hunt, we are moving on though from the 1970's to the early 1980's. In fact it's 1981: the year of the Royal Wedding, the Brixton riots, Bucks Fizz winning the Eurovision Song Contest – and the year that Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) takes the Met by storm.

Gene Hunt, the politically incorrect, loud-mouthed, sexist DCI from the hit TV drama Life On Mars, was, on the surface, an unlikely cult figure. However, the combination of his winning personality and somewhat "traditional" approach to policing helped to firmly establish him in the national consciousness.

Jane Featherstone, joint MD of Kudos Film & Television and executive producer of both Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, explained the genesis of the new series.

"As Life On Mars was drawing to an end, the BBC approached us and asked if we thought there could be a sequel or follow-up with the character of Gene Hunt, but a few years later," explains Jane. "We sat down and all realised that it could be brilliant to bring Gene into the early-Eighties – a fascinating time of cultural, musical and political transition."

From the start, the production team knew that Ashes To Ashes had to offer viewers a totally new journey, and say new things about the much-loved Gene Hunt. Life On Mars had offered very little information on Gene's past and personal life, making him something of an enigma.

The introduction of a female DI, Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes), meant that a totally new dynamic could be created without garnering comparisons to the good cop/bad cop, "buddy" relationship experienced by Sam and Gene.

"The relationship between Gene Hunt and Alex Drake is critical to Ashes To Ashes," continues Jane. "It is tumultuous, sexy, intellectual, instinctive and totally different to his relationship with Sam."

As the creative process continued, it became clear that the sexual tension between the two characters would be one of the key hooks to the series.

Jane explains: "Gene has never come across a woman like Alex before and she rocks his world. How is it possible to work with someone so incredibly confident and attractive, not to mention posh and from London, and, bloody hell, a woman?! Through Alex's presence at the station, we see a different side to Gene – a more complex, gentler side, a man with dreams, hopes and fears."

Despite a new era and leading lady being added to the mix, it's not all change and Gene Hunt still offers his unique take on the ghost of England's past. Beth Willis, the show's producer, says:

"We thought we'd bring him to London where his northern views would come into sharp conflict with 'the southern ponces' he finds there. And, of course, he should take his A-team of Ray Carling and Chris Skelton with him."

With the series set in the early Eighties, the production team recognised a great opportunity to display the change in policing since 1973 – changes which have, perhaps, had an impact on the once supremely cock-sure Gene.

Writer and co-creator Ashley Pharaoh explains: "All the research we did indicated that the police knew the Scarman Report was on its way, and they knew it wasn't going to be good news, so the threat of that hangs over the whole series.

"A very specific era of policing is coming to an end. I think there's a slight sense of melancholy to Gene at times – he misses the North and the old days, but he's a fighter and refuses to give up."

The next challenge was how to take Alex Drake – a police psychologist and thoroughly modern woman of the 21st century – into the world of Gene Hunt, a world she knows about only through her sessions with the now deceased Sam Tyler.

Matthew Graham, co-creator, writer and executive producer for Monastic Productions, realised that the premise would have to be water-tight to work on screen: "Through Sam, Alex has learnt all about Gene Hunt, Ray Carling and Chris Skelton.

"Alex is called to an intense hostage crisis involving a drug dealer who shoots her in the head at point-blank range. Next thing she knows, she's in 1981."

As if waking up dressed as a prostitute in the early Eighties with Ultravox ringing in your ears isn't bad enough, Alex is forced to confront a much larger problem.

Matthew continues: "Alex is horrified to discover that sharing her delusion are the very characters she heard about from Sam Tyler, in particular a certain DCI Gene Hunt! Furthermore, 1981 was the very year her parents were killed in a car bomb – is that somehow connected to her presence there?"

But, in the meantime, Alex must find a way to get on with her new boss, concludes Jane: "Alex finds that Gene is a compassionate man, fighting for justice and what he thinks is right, despite his incredibly dated views of womanhood. The result is funny, electric and surprising."

It's time to dig out that Rubik's Cube – 1981 here we come!

American Gangster tells the epic and true story of notorious drugs’ lord Frank Lucas. Starting out as a humble chauffeur, Frank Lucas is a man with a mission. Rising from quiet apprentice to mentor Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, a gangster who runs much of Harlem, to become the richest of businessmen Lucas has a steely work ethic, intelligent determination and a deadly, ruthless streak. Following Bumpy’s death, he seizes the opportunity to build his own base of power and wealth. Hitting on a heroin importation scheme stretching from New York to war-torn Vietnam, Lucas personally travels to South-East Asia. With the help of his cousin, an Army Senior NCO, he successfully negotiates a deal with a Thai general. So begins the importation of “pure heroin, “a product that’s better than the competition at a price that’s lower than the competition”.

Federal investigator Richie Roberts works on the other side of the law. Incorruptible, dedicated and shunned by his department after he turns in nearly $1 million in unmarked bills, Roberts is a rare being in 1970s New York, an honest cop. An outsider who operates by his own rules and has a work ethic which mirrors that of Lucas, Roberts is tasked to investigate and stop drug trafficking in New York City. When Lucas abandons his deliberate conservatism for one fateful night, Roberts’ watchful eye takes in that he not only mixes with but appears more powerful than the highest level criminals. As Roberts’ attention focuses and his grip tightens on his worthy adversary, it’s only a matter of time before predator catches up with prey…

American Gangster is a captivating, ultra-slick and well-crafted insight into the true story of one of America’s most powerful men and the man set on bringing him down.

ITV today unveiled a new look schedule for its flagship channel, ITV1, with increased focus on week day peak time hours and a revitalised weekend line up.

The main revisions to the ITV1 Winter 2008 schedule include:

• The return of News at Ten
• More 60 minute dramas at 21.00
• More comedy, drama and entertainment Friday to Sunday
• Coronation Street and Emmerdale move from Sunday evenings
• Dancing On Ice moves to Sunday night
• More investment in acquired programming post 22.30

It has been confirmed today that News At Ten will return to ITV1 from Monday 14th January. As well as returning an iconic and much loved ITV brand to the heart of peak, this move allows ITV to invest further in original, hour long drama at 9pm. This month sees the launch of a number of new titles in this slot including The Palace, a contemporary drama set in a fictional Buckingham Palace; interlinked comedy and soap Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach, and Honest, a new six part comedy drama starring Amanda Redman.

As part of wider changes to a revamped weekend line up designed to be distinct from the week day schedule, there will be a later evening news bulletin Friday to Sunday to allow comedy, entertainment, drama and feature films to be played uninterrupted.

Weekends on ITV1 will be given a noticeably different look and feel with a renewed focus on new comedy, entertainment and drama. The reinvigorated Friday to Sunday schedule allows greater freedom and a broader programme mix, with hit entertainment shows like Dancing On Ice moving into Sunday night and remodelled Friday nights featuring more comedy and entertainment, starting with the new series of Al Murray’s Happy Hour at 10pm from Friday 11 January.

Saturday nights retain their place as the centrepiece of ITV’s weekend entertainment line up, with brand new prime time quiz show Duel launching this month. January also sees the return of family drama to Saturday evenings with the second series of Primeval and fresh new comedy as Paul Merton makes a welcome return to ITV1 in improvisation show Thank God You’re Here.

As entertainment moves into Sunday evenings from mid-January, Coronation Street moves from Sunday nights to a second episode at on 8.30pm on Fridays and Emmerdale also moves from Sunday night, meaning a reduction in the number of nights ITV soaps are broadcast without reducing the number of episodes. Drama still plays an important part in the Sunday night line up, however, with the return of last year’s highest rating new drama, Kingdom and a new series of Wild At Heart this month.

The move of the news also opens up a window for more factual programming, films and acquired programming on ITV1 at 10.30pm.

The new schedule will be supported by extensive off-air marketing activity, with campaigns created by ITV’s newly appointed agency BBH launching this week for Moving Wallpaper/Echo Beach, Honest and Primeval.

ITV Director of Television, Simon Shaps said: “One of the principal ideas behind these changes is to make the weekends on ITV1 feel special. We have always been the home of Saturday night entertainment and we want to broaden that out to make the whole weekend on ITV1 something to look forward to. This has meant a wholesale spring clean for Friday nights with new comedy, drama and feature films to get the weekend started, and a much fresher look to Sunday evenings with entertainment shaking up the historically drama-led schedule.

“The restructuring of the peak time schedule and the return of News at Ten means that we’ve got a great opportunity to recapture some lost ground at 9pm and we’ve responded to viewer feedback on Coronation Street and Emmerdale so that fans can catch up with their favourite soaps over fewer nights.

“The new shape allows greater freedom and flexibility to create new hits within the schedule. In all, these changes make for a more streamlined, user friendly schedule that plays to ITV1’s strengths as an entertainment powerhouse and the home of original drama.”
